2009 Pink Truck (by Red Truck Wines)

Pink Truck bottle shot

The Pink Truck is part of the Red Truck line of wines, and is their only rosé (“pink”) wine. The winemaker describes this as an “off-dry” wine. The residual sugar is not listed on the tech sheet, but the alcohol level is only 10.5%. This generally indicates a fairly sweet wine. The blend is 65% …

German Riesling and Blue Cheese

Right now, I’m enjoying some Maytag Blue Cheese with a 2002 Reinhold Haart Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Spätlese wine. I’m just enjoying it, and not trying to review it. It’s a wonderful combination. The sharp flavors of the blue cheese balance nicely with the sweetness of the Riesling. This is a fairly typical German Riesling Spätlese. The …

Two “Big House” Blends

Big House Wines Logo

Since I was so impressed with the previous Big House wines (Pinot Grigio and Syrah), I decided to try their blends. I picked up the 2009 Big House White and the 2010 Big House Red. 2009 Big House White Wow. What a fragrant nose. I’m getting some fruit (maybe gooseberry) and floral. There’s some rose …

2010 Sovereign Estate Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc label

This is another wine from Sovereign Estate Winery. I had previously reviewed a white wine, the Talon Crest. This wine is a red wine made from Cabernet Franc grapes. Cabernet Franc is one of the parents of the well-known Cabernet Sauvignon, and has some similar characteristics. Like the Talon Crest, the winery could not list …

2009 Big House Wines “The Slammer” Syrah

2009 Big House Wines "The Slammer" Syrah

More wine from the Big House. No, this wine wasn’t made in a prison. This wine is from Big House Wines, which is located close to a prison. Read more about the winery on my review of their Pinot Grigio. The people at Big House Wines and Folsom + Associates were nice enough to send …

2010 Sovereign Estate Talon Crest

Bottle Label

My wife and I purchased this wine from Sovereign Estate Winery during our recent visit. It is 100% Seyval Blanc, which is a variety that we had never previously tasted. Although the winery is located in Minnesota, the grapes were purchased from another state due to a limited supply of local grapes. The bottle does …

2010 Big House Wines “The Birdman” Pinot Grigio

Bottle shot

Today’s wine is something a little different than what I usually drink. This is a Pinot Grigio from California. I’ve had very little Pinot Grigio in the past. According to my records, I’ve only had one bottle before. I guess it is time to try this variety again. I’m not really sure what to expect …

Sovereign Estate Winery

Sovereign Estate Winery

My wife and I visited the Sovereign Estate Winery near Waconia, Minnesota. We were greeted by the winemaker, Thijs Verschuuren. Although he has a Dutch name, he is from France, and he came to the US after working in many wineries and vineyards in France. He poured our wine samples, and we enjoyed hearing the …

2009 Red Rock Winery Winemaker’s Blend

Red Rock Winery wine bottle

I think wine blends are very interesting. I enjoy trying them, because I’m never sure what it will be like. If I get a Zinfandel or a Chardonnay or a Syrah, I know basically what the wine will be like, as each grape variety has certain characteristics that almost always come through in the wine. …
